One Summer Day in Olympic National Park
Summer Itinerary: Hidden Trails & Coastal Adventures
Summer on the Olympic Peninsula is pure magic—long daylight hours, wild ocean breezes, and endless trails waiting to be explored. From tidepool treks to rainforest hikes, each day at Kalaloch is an invitation to chase the sun from the beach to the trees.
-
Morning
- Begin your day with coffee and pancakes at Creekside Restaurant, where sunlight spills through the windows overlooking Kalaloch Creek.
- Lace up your hiking boots and make the short drive to Beach 4, home to one of the area’s best tidepool hikes. Follow the wooden staircase down to a maze of sea stars, anemones, and hidden coves.
- Continue south to Beach 1, where the Spruce Burl Trail leads you through a cathedral of gnarled driftwood and coastal forest—perfect for photos and a quiet moment to yourself.
-
Afternoon
- Head inland toward the Quinault Rain Forest, a lesser-known gem where mossy trails wind through giant Sitka spruce and waterfalls tumble over ancient rock. Don’t miss the Maple Glade Rain Forest Trail, an easy, otherworldly loop through ferns and filtered light.
- Stop for a picnic along the Quinault Loop Drive, where elk often graze in the meadows and trailheads lead to short hikes like Willaby Creek or Cascade Falls.
- On the way back, pull off at Beach 6 for a quick walk to the viewpoint overlooking Destruction Island—a hidden photo stop most travelers miss.
-
Evening
- Borrow a lawn game from the lodge and sip an evening drink of your choice. When the sun begins to drop, head down to the beach to build a bonfire in the sand and toast s’mores under a salmon-pink sky.
- End your day in true Kalaloch fashion: feet buried in the cool sand, stars overhead, and the Pacific whispering just beyond the driftwood line.
