What to expect

Tides

Tide levels vary daily, but seasonal patterns make a difference. Expect stronger swells and higher tides in fall and winter, and more predictable low tides in spring and summer — perfect for exploring tidepools when conditions allow. For the safest and most memorable visit, always review the current tide chart before heading to the beach.

Winter

Sunlight shines on foamy ocean waves as they crash and roll toward the shore in Olympic National Park.

Winter on Washington’s coast is dramatic in all the right ways. Expect temperatures in the low 40s to mid-50s °F, steady rainfall, and the occasional storm rolling in from the Pacific. It’s a spectacular time for storm watching, beachcombing, and photographing the wild, windswept beauty that defines this part of Olympic National Park. Inside, the cozy glow of Kalaloch Lodge offers the perfect retreat from the elements.

Spring

Spring brings a sense of renewal to the Olympic coast. Temperatures typically range from the mid-40s to upper 50s °F, with frequent light rain and mist that make the rainforest come alive in vibrant shades of green. Wildflowers bloom along the bluffs, waterfalls surge with snowmelt, and tidepools brim with sea life. Be sure to pack waterproof layers and sturdy footwear.

Summer

A couple walks up wooden steps from Kalaloch Beach, with the ocean and clear blue sky in the background.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Kalaloch, offering long daylight hours and mild temperatures in the 60s °F. Days are often clear or partly cloudy, with cool ocean breezes and crisp, refreshing evenings. It’s perfect for beach walks, picnics, and watching sunsets that linger well past 9 p.m. While rain is less frequent, packing a light jacket and layers is always a good idea.

Fall

Sunlight peeks through tall evergreen trees on a forested, rocky shoreline with driftwood in Olympic National Park.

Fall at Kalaloch is quiet, moody, and unforgettable. Temperatures hover between the upper 40s and mid-50s °F as the coast transforms under golden light and occasional fog. The crowds thin, wildlife sightings increase, and the rhythmic sound of the waves feels even more peaceful. Expect more rain as the season goes on—perfect weather for curling up by your cabin’s fire with a good book or a warm drink from Creekside Restaurant.
